Images of Shan Shan Sheng’ s latest large project in Oklahoma City. The childrens hospital features 20 of Shan Shan’ s enormous butterflies suspended in the atrium of the new building. Built to form a spacious fleet of airy, transparent forms, the sculpture will convey the wonder and metamorphosis of wellness and healing.

Open Wall Project

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Ok so if any of you out there were wondering why I headed off in the direction of Venice well here is one the reasons!

As part of my yearly return to the worlds centre of glass I was invited by artist and glass making veteran Shan Shan Sheng to help take down her 53rd Venice Biennale installation Open Wall. The piece was made in the legendary Ferro factory whose walls I managed to take a quick peak inside. Big. I am told there is a church somewhere inside.

Open wall highlights China’s recent opening. Made of two thousand two hundred and eight twelve kilo bricks to signify each year of existance of Chinas great wall.  Pivotal time dates in Chinas history were marked on the wall such Marco Polo’s birth date and the arrival of Chinese people in Italy. The next step of the journey is for the wall to be transported to China for next years World Expo 2010. Twelve of these bricks will travel by the hands of local people over the silk road – Polo’s route from Venice to China.
